Greetings,
Library Enthusiasts & Bibliophiles:
Today is the first of what will be many blogs about public libraries. As an aspiring author, the public library has been invaluable for both research and pleasure. Library Spotlights will highlight local libraries in Connecticut and beyond, featuring interesting and fun facts about these institutions. So, the next time you need a new book, consider visiting your public library instead of buying or downloading it. You will be amazed at the breadth and depth of titles, resources, and knowledgeable staff to assist you as you rediscover your local library.
Let’s Visit: The West Haven Public Library

On the corner of Elm and Campbell Avenue, in West Haven, CT, sits the West Haven Public Library.
Opening its doors on September 1, 1909, the library remains a prominent fixture in the town of West Haven. Over its 116-year history, the library has undergone changes and additions to the building, including the establishment of additional branch locations in West Haven.
The operation of the library, governed by the Village Improvement Association, was established in 1906. The association was tasked with beautifying the city and establishing a permanent home for the public library. Today, VIA serves as the governing body for the library, working in conjunction with the library director. The VIA mission is to provide public access to library buildings and materials for citizens of all ages.
Andrew Carnegie, the steel tycoon, used his vast wealth to fund libraries across America. One thousand six hundred eighty-nine public libraries received grants. The West Haven Public Library was a recipient of a $10,000 Carnegie Grant. Eleven other public libraries in Connecticut also received grants. The Village Improvement Association raised an additional $1,510.50 for the construction of the library.
2009 was the centennial celebration of the West Haven Public Library. Library supporters planned special events and activities throughout the year, culminating in a dedicated birthday party for the library. While horses and buggies were the norm in 1909, today technology supports library staff and enables patrons to access library materials in various ways.
