Greetings:

Library Enthusiasts & Bibliophiles:

Fall is here! What a great time to curl up with a good book. As I continue my travels across Connecticut, I marvel at all our public libraries provide, from toddlers to seniors! The public library has something for everyone. My recent visit included a stop at the Russell Public Library in Middletown. What a fascinating history! It began in a church, and the beautiful stained glass windows remain a permanent fixture of the library today. The outdoor courtyard is a must-see! As always, come and experience the joy of the library!

Let’s Visit

The Russell Public Library

Mrs. Frances Russell, a remarkable woman, has left her mark on Middletown, CT. In honor of her husband, she donated the Russell House to Wesleyan University and the historic Russell Chapel to the city of Middletown. Lastly, Mrs. Russell purchased The Episcopal Church of the Holy Trinity in 1873 and renovated it as the first Public Library of Middletown.

The building opened on April 5, 1876. Patrons had to be 14 years of age, and you were allowed to borrow one book at a time.

Over time, the library expanded. Construction work included adding a children's library, called the Hubbard Room, with a working fireplace!

Twenty years later, additional renovations took place to create much-needed space for books. The library's expansion continued with the purchase of the First Federal Savings and Loan building in 1972. This building, once remodeled, became the new children's library.

Renovations continued, and in 1983, the residents were happy to be able to walk between the children's library and the main library without going outside. Other additions included an elevator, ramps for accessibility, and buildings that now formed an enclosure for a courtyard. The courtyard contains native plants and benches.

Over the years, several additions and renovations have grown with the residents' needs. The building's future is under reconsideration as residents and town officials assess the library's future needs. Architectural renderings for a new library are available on the library website.

Thanks to the generosity of Frances Russell, Middletown, CT has experienced the joy of reading for almost 150 years. What will the next 150 years bring?
