Greetings:

Library Enthusiasts & Bibliophiles:

Happy Holidays! What a busy time of the year. I hope everyone spends time relaxing with family, friends, and of course, an enjoyable book. My travels this month brought me to the Plainville Public Library. What a history! It all started in 1894 in Plainville, CT, and included a beautiful restoration of the 1931 section. As always, experience library joy at a library near you.

Let’s Visit the Plainville Public Library

In 1894, residents of Plainville, CT, voted to establish a free public library in Town Hall. This building currently houses the Historical Society. In just over 35 years, the library had outgrown this space and needed a new home.

In 1931, a new building was constructed, containing 4,813 books. As the library's success grew, overcrowding became an issue. Ten years later, a decision was made to relocate the children’s room to the library's basement to free up space for additional books and patrons.

The first major renovation of the library took place in 1962. It included a revamped children’s room, a meeting room, and the addition of two floors to house more books.

By early 2000, the library was at capacity. The residents agreed that another addition to the library was needed, and groundbreaking took place in July 2001.

September 19, 2004, marked the grand opening celebration of the completed renovation. The renovation included space for 128,000 books, two additional meeting rooms, and a very colorful children’s room. By far one of the most stunning renovations included the 1931 original library. It features beautiful oak paneling, oak floors, and bookcases, marble fireplaces, and pillars; it is truly outstanding and a tranquil place to complete work.
